Pomega Gigafactory shall be ready for production within 2023 first quarter
Pomega Gigafactory, the first private sector lithium-ion battery cell and energy storage systems factory of Türkiye, is planned to launch production in the first quarter of 2023.
The factory, providing “a new power” for our country’s energy industry in 2023, being the 100th anniversary of our Republic, is being established on a 100 thousand sqm surface. The facility shall be named as Pomega Gigafactory and will be one of the greatest investments of our country in energy storage sphere.
The facility is a subsidiary of Kontrolmatik. The firm operates in 32 different countries in energy, process industry, transportation and mining sectors. When all phases of the facility are completed and commissioned, an investment of 180 million dollars shall be revealed. The construction of the factory is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The factory, which shall be ready for mass production in the first quarter of 2023, is planned to reach an annual battery cell production capacity of 500 MWh in the first phase and 1.5 GWh per year when all phases are completed. The factory will meet not only the domestic market, but also the battery requirements of the countries in the region, especially in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LiFEPO4) was chosen as the production technology, which has been proven in global applications.
Employment and R&D
The factory, whose recruitment processes are still continuing, shall employ 250 people and approximately 600 people in total, with the commissioning of the first phase. Turkish engineers and employees are given priority at the facility. R&D activities will also be carried out at the factory in order to develop new technologies that can operate with high efficiency and low maintenance under different conditions or to improve existing technologies. Kontrolmatik has acquired 50.1% of Enwair’s shares, which will carry out research to improve battery chemistry and produce more efficient products.
‘Storage’ becomes more and more important
The development of storage is of great importance, especially in the growth of the renewable energy sector. Legal arrangements made in this area also gained momentum in Türkiye. Kontrolmatik will continue to work on lithium-ion batteries and different technologies to make renewable energy sustainable.
