The Smart and Renewable Energy Technologies Society (SAYET) at Samsun University in Türkiye places onshore and offshore wind energy at the top of its agenda, positioning students not only as the energy sector’s future workforce but as active stakeholders today. Its motto sums up the approach: “The Energy of the Future, the Youth of Today.”

As renewable energy technologies, digitalisation and offshore wind gain strategic weight in Türkiye’s energy transition, young people trained at universities are emerging as important actors in that shift. SAYET’s student organisation is led by Society President Ela İlkim Aydın. Shaped jointly by academic and student leadership, the team has structured the society as a platform that connects the university, industry, the public sector and young people, rather than as a group that only organises events.

Wind energy at the core

The society’s fields of work include onshore and offshore wind energy, smart energy systems, artificial intelligence and digitalisation, energy storage, hydrogen technologies, energy efficiency, and nuclear and advanced energy technologies. Offshore wind is one of SAYET’s most prominent topics. Work at the intersection of meteorology, engineering, environment, energy and digital technologies enables students from different disciplines to develop joint projects.

Academia, industry and youth at the same table

A stakeholder approach lies at the centre of SAYET’s structure. The society aims to bring students together with academics, energy industry representatives, public institutions, professional bodies, research centres and civil society organisations.

Alongside seminars, technical training, workshops, site visits and hands-on events, activities such as project development, ideathons and hackathons help students turn their knowledge into concrete work. The society also focuses on developing projects in energy technologies, accessing national and international support mechanisms, and running joint initiatives with students from other universities.

A youth network beyond Samsun

SAYET’s vision extends beyond Samsun University: it aims to build a wider youth network bringing together students from different universities, academics, industry representatives and other stakeholders of the energy ecosystem. According to the society, supporting the qualified workforce the energy transition needs from university years onward, strengthening interaction between academia and industry, and involving students in real projects form the basis of its approach.

The motto “The Energy of the Future, the Youth of Today” underlines that young people are not only the sector’s future employees but stakeholders who already produce knowledge, develop ideas, design projects and contribute to the transition.
