Wind generated 27.9 per cent of the UK’s electricity in the second quarter of 2026 (April–June), overtaking gas-fired generation at 26.8 per cent, according to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). Renewables’ share of total generation reached a record 55.8 per cent in the same period.
According to the “Energy Trends: UK, April to June 2026” statistical release published by DESNZ on 29 September 2026, wind generation rose by 9 per cent year on year to 19.2 TWh.
11.2 TWh from offshore wind
Offshore wind farms generated 11.2 TWh, up 7.1 per cent year on year, while onshore wind output increased by 13 per cent to 7.9 TWh.
Solar and renewable capacity
Solar generation increased by 0.2 per cent to 8.4 TWh, matching last year’s record high, and accounted for 12.3 per cent of total generation.
The UK’s renewable installed capacity reached 66.3 GW, up 2.7 GW (4.2 per cent) on the second quarter of 2025. According to the release, solar PV accounted for three quarters of the new capacity.
